2009 Spring Topical Conference
"PETROPHYSICAL EVALUATION OF UNCONVENTIONAL RESERVOIRS"
PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA
HYATT PENN'S LANDING
MARCH 15 - 19
Unconventional gas resources have seen a very marked increase in exploitation potential in recent years and are becoming a very important focus are for petrophysicists working in industry and academia. This topical conference is designed to gather expertise across the petrophysical, geological and engineering communities to discuss and brainstorm the various measurements and evaluation techniques of Unconventional Reservoirs that can be used to efficiently evaluate gas reserves held in these complex accumulations.
Conference steering committee:
David Dudus, Imperial Oil Resources (co-chair)
Sue Cluff, Discovery Group (co-chair)
Rick Lewis, Schlumberger
Xianyun Wu, ExxonMobil Upstream Research
Dick Merkel, Newfield
Dan Coope, Baker Hughes Inteq
Russell Spears, ExxonMobil Production Company
The specific content submitted for this conference will set the final agenda, focusing upon specific problems and challenges of Unconventional Reservoirs including, but not limited to:
Shale Gas:
· Measurement suites and strategies specific to shales: log and core data.
· "Conventional" water saturation calculations: are they meaningful?
· Wettabilty of shales
· Total-organic-carbon prediction from logs
· Gas-in-place assessment techniques
· Horizontal well petrophysics for shale gas applications
· Standards for shale gas evaluation from well logs
· Free vs. Adsorbed gas: what is the most important controller for reserves and how is this controlled thermodynamically
· Electrical and acoustic anisotropy of shales
Tight Gas:
· Measurement suites and strategies specific to tight gas reservoirs: log and core data
· Relative permeability and capillary pressure applications
· Evaluation of "basin-centered" accumulations effectively
· Identifying movable and bound water
· Assessment of impact of natural fractures on petrophysical evaluations
Coal Bed Methane:
· Measurement suites and strategies specific to CBM: log and core data
· How to effectively evaluation gas-in-place in CBM plays from logs?
· Permeability estimates for CBM plays from well data
Format: this conference will be informal with "off-the-record" discussions. The organization will include morning, afternoon and evening sessions, with both 15-20 minute presentations-discussion sessions along with informal break-out sessions for detailed discussion. No papers or abstracts will be published and "work-in-progress" examples are encouraged. Commercialism in presentation is strictly prohibited in this conference and should be avoided!
Cost: $1300 (member), $1375 (non-member), $355 (spouse). Registration includes conference fees, 4 nights accommodation, breakfast and lunch (Monday - Wednesday), commemorative shirt, icebreaker, and conference dinner. Non-participant fees will include icebreaker and group meals. Additional details are available at www.spwla.org or through the SPWLA business office (713-947-8727).
Registration: No onsite registration will be available and registration is done purely online at www.spwla.org. Registration deadline is February 27, 2009 and payment is due at time of registration. Please click link to register.
http://www.spwla.org/events/2009_spring_topical_conference/2009_spring_topical_submit.htm Presentation submissions: Participants are strongly encouraged to provide presentations and topics for discussion and take an active role in the conference. Please provide a description of presentation content on the application form. Presenters that have presentations included in the final agenda will be notified prior to the conference.
