Abstract
The role of colloid deposition on the performance of a salt-rejecting NF membrane was evaluated by modeling salt transport using a two-layer transport model, which quantified the relative contributions of advection and diffusion in the cake and the membrane layers, and the effects of flux on the membrane sieving coefficient. The model was able to accurately describe how the measured permeate concentration, rejection, osmotic pressure, and flux decline varied with time. The two-layer model confirmed that the Peclet number in the cake layer was about an order of magnitude higher than that in the membrane layer, leading to significant concentration polarization at the membrane surface, as shown by others. However, the cake layer also increased overall resistance, which resulted in flux decline during constant pressure operation. Flux decline caused an increase in the actual sieving coefficient, leading to higher solute flux, lower observed rejection, and thus lower the bulk concentration. These coupled phenomena tended to mitigate the increase in concentration polarization caused by the cake. Therefore, as predicted by the model and verified by experiment, the osmotic pressure does not increase monotonically as the cake grows, and in fact can decrease when the cake layer is thick and the flux decline is significant. In our experimental system, the pressure drop across the cake layer, which was proportional to the cake thickness, was significant under the conditions studied. The effects of cake-enhanced osmotic pressure analyzed here are lower than those observed in previous studies, possibly because the transport model employed explicitly accounts for the effect of flux decline due to cake growth on the membrane sieving coefficient, and possibly because we used a somewhat different methodology to estimate cake porosity.

Abstract
A series of reverse osmosis (RO) membrane filtration experiments was performed systematically in order to investigate the effects of various hydrodynamic and physicochemical operational parameters on a cake layer formation in colloidal and particulate suspensions. Bench-scale fouling experiments with a thin-film composite RO membrane were performed at various combinations of trans-membrane pressure (TMP), cross-flow velocity (CFV), particle size, pH, and ionic strength. In this study, silica particles with two different mean diameters of 0.1 and 3.0 мm were used as model colloids. Membrane filtration experiments with colloidal suspensions under various hydrodynamic operating conditions resulted that more significant permeate flux decline was observed as TMP increased and CFV decreased, which was attributed to the higher accumulative mass of particles on the membrane surface. Results of fouling experiments under various physicochemical operating conditions demonstrated that the rate of flux decline decreased significantly with an increase of the ionic strength as well as particle size, while the flux decline rate did not vary when solution pH changed. The experimentally measured cake layer thickness increased with a decrease in particle size and solution ionic strength. Furthermore, the model estimation of cake layer thickness by using a cake filtration theory based on the hydraulic resistance of membrane and cake layer was performed under various ionic strength conditions. The primary model parameters including accumulated mass and specific cake resistance were calculated from the cake layer resistance. This result indicated that the formation of cake layer could be closely related with solution water chemistry. The model estimated cake layer thickness values were in good agreement with the experimentally measured values.

Abstract
An analytic method is introduced to calculate hydraulic permeability of porous media composed of polydispersed spheres with log-normal and normal (Gaussian) distributions of particle sizes. From the comparison of the permeability for the two particle-size distributions, it was observed that a medium with normally distributed particle sizes consistently has a lower permeability than a medium with log-normally distributed particle sizes. This phenomenon is due to the larger number of smaller particles in the normal distribution, which results in greater cake resistance. The specific resistance of the cake layer is computed by taking the inverse of the permeability.
