Dear Member, It is time to vote for your Board of Directors 2008-2009. We sent you by mail the Biography and Position statement letters at the beginning of this week. We hope that you have received your packet and that you plan to cast your vote. You can do so by sending back your ballot by mail or using our easy online voting option. You can access the online voting by going to our web site www.spwla.org and on the front page look for “Elections for next year's SPWLA Board”. We express our sincere apology to Mr. Matt Bratovich and Mr. John Zhou for the accidental omission of text to their position statements that were submitted to us. The statements should have read “WHAT I WOULD LIKE TO ACCOMPLISH IN MY ELECTED POSITION” by MATT BRATOVICH I view the role of the VP of Finance, Secretary and Admn as vital to the long term success of the society. In order to insure the long term viability of our society we must be very active and very effective at attracting younger professionals to join. I would work towards establishing a more organized approach to recruiting new members in all areas of the world. Because our society that is much smaller than SPE or AAPG we must not only develop materials to explain why membership is SPWLA is a good choice for young professionals, one that is relevant for their professional development. We must find a way to motivate our current members to actively recruit. We should also seek to develop creative ways to encourage more student participation in our society functions and to increasing our society exposure to both undergraduates and graduate students in universities around the world. In addition to the membership function of this position the office involves monitoring the financial aspects of the society. This ranges from responsibility for society business office staff expenditures to development of the annual budget for the society which is submitted to the Board for approval. It is important that we leverage the monies we have available to provide the most benefits to the membership. I want to work with the Board and business office staff to prioritize expenditures to achieve the maximum impact for the society. The third aspect of the position involves accurate timely recording and publication of the actions of the Board. I feel this is necessary to maintain confidence in the Board by the membership. I would work to insure this communication function is provided in a timely and professional manner. “WHAT I WOULD LIKE TO ACCOMPLISH IN MY ELECTED POSITION” by QIANG (JOHN) ZHOU candidate for Vice President Technology – As our society enters next fiscal year, we will be celebrating its 50th birthday. Being a member of SPWLA for the past 18 years, I have benefited greatly from the information exchange through various Society venues. Since our industry is in an expansion phase and there is also a severe shortage of talents, effective information dissemination will enable the industry to meet an ever increasing demand for qualified petrophysicists and innovative technologies to solve complex exploration challenges. Since the annual SPWLA symposium is the focus of VP-technology and the Symposium is also the largest event for the society, if elected, I will ensure its continuing success. First, I will actively seek paper submissions on a wide range of topics and from broad geographic areas which represent the industry activities, membership demographics, and future trends. Then, a quality technical program will be assembled with abstracts carefully reviewed and selected by the technical committee consisting of experts from a full spectrum of backgrounds. The technical program will also emphasize on the innovative ideas from graduate students to guarantee the long-term success of our society. Last, certainly not the least, we will effectively deliver the technical program to benefit extensively all SPWLA members and the industry and to truly celebrate SPWLA’s 50th golden anniversary. We have also updated the pdf of the bio and position statements on our web site. We regret this error and hope that it has not made a negative impact on your decision for candidate. Regards, Sharon Johnson SPWLA, Assistant Director 8866 Gulf Frwy, Suite 320 Houston, TX 77017 713-947-8727
