2008 Spring SPWLA Topical Conference Well Placement and 3D Petrophysics in High-Angle and Horizontal Wells
Taos, New Mexico - March 30 - April 2, 2008
Application deadline: March 10, 2008 - Register online www.spwla.org
_________________________________________________________________________
This special gathering of experts will consider all aspects of geosteering/navigation in High-angle and Horizontal wells.
Topics will concern reducing uncertainty in well placement and increasing reservoir exposure and ultimately reservoir NPV
in High-Angle and Horizontal wells. This will be a memorable event unlike any previous topical conferences with maximum
interaction and participation. Come with your sleeves rolled up and ready.
The technical program will focus on business-driven problems and issues. Case studies, local practices, and investigations
into specific challenges are especially welcomed. Possible topics may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Data acquisition (tool response modeling issues, new generation deep reading resistivity tools, forward modeling, nuclear
tool issues in HA/HZ wells)
- Use of integrated sets of measurements for reducing uncertainty (geosteering and reservoir characterization) from
preplanning to post well
- Identification of data or information gaps that are needed for decision making in real-time.
FORMAT: SPWLA Topical Conferences are structured, but informal. No papers or transactions are published. We
encourage submission of work-in-progress or problems not yet solved. Presentations will typically be 20-30 minutes
(including questions). Small break-out groups will discuss special topics proposed by participants and the Steering
Committee, then report back in plenary session. In keeping with conference objectives and practice in other SPWLAsponsored
events, commercialism in speaker presentations will not be permitted.
SPEAKER SOLICITATION: The Steering Committee seeks presenters and participants with a diversity of expertise and
experience. No written papers or abstracts will be published.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND: Technical and management staff working on petrophysics, tool physics/instrumentation, or
interpretation of wireline and MWD/LWD logs in HA/HZ wells for formation evaluation and reservoir characterization.
PACKAGED COST:
Option 1 - Topical Conference only US$1100 (SPWLA members), $1175 (non-members) and $200 for non-participant
partners. This includes registration, 4 night’s accommodations (Sunday-Wednesday), commemorative event shirt,
Conference dinner & icebreaker, breakfasts & lunches Monday through Wednesday. For more details, contact the SPWLA
business office: phone: 713-947-8727; e-mail: Vicki@spwla.org or Sharon@spwla.org
Option 2 - Topical Conference plus 1-day (Sunday 8am-4pm) workshop on “Horizontal Well Path Planning and Geosteering
Fundamentals”. Cost US$1250 (SPWLA members), $1325 (non-members) and $200 for non-participant partners (thus,
participation in this Sunday workshop is at an additional cost of $150). This option includes registration, 5 night’s
accommodations (Saturday-Wednesday), commemorative event shirt, Sunday evening dinner & icebreaker, breakfasts &
lunches Sunday through Wednesday. This workshop is available only to fulltime Topical Conference registrants.
OPTIONAL WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION (Sunday 8AM-4PM):
This 1-day workshop is designed to provide attendees with the necessary skills needed to be able to react to real-time
geological and directional complexities that maybe encountered while drilling, to then make adjustments to the well path
plan and to precisely place a horizontal well within the objective reservoir.
Exercises within the workshop will teach attendees 1) the basics of well path planning; 2) how to design flexible well path
plans; 2) how to preplan key geosteering decision points; 3) how to monitoring directional surveys data to improve wellbore
positional accuracy; and 4) the art geosteering and horizontal well correlation. Skills will be tested using exercises derive
from actual well data to simulate real-time geosteering situations.
